Therapist Pat Wyman’s ground-breaking book, Three Keys to Self-Understanding, introduces a unique and effective threefold approach to psychotherapy incorporating

  • the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® instrument
  • the Enneagram
  • Affective or right brain Healing

Wyman skillfully balances the theoretical with the practical, weaving experiential exercises and techniques into the detailed presentation of real-life case histories.

Intended as a hands-on, interactive guide for self-exploration, the book will also appeal to practicing counselors, therapists, and facilitators. (For book outline and chapter summary, click here.)

Emotional Wounds Wyman believes that, to varying degrees, we all grow up in dysfunctional families, which cannot help but inflict emotional wounds of one sort or another. The result of this early wounding is the development of a Defense System and the fragmenting of our Core Self.”Some people never fully express their true personalities because of obstacles from the past,” says Wyman. Only by healing these deep wounds (and thereby dismantling our Defense System) are we able to access our Core Self. How to Heal
This dynamic method of healing utilizes affective therapy in the form of Inner-Child work, based on an individual’s personality type:

  • the Enneagram represents a person’s Defense System
  • the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® describes the Core Self and, by extension, the Inner Child

Starting with identification of the triggers that move you away from your Core Self, you begin to re-establish access to your inner wisdom – integrating your mind, body, and spirit – and thus creating a safe place to be you.

“Up until now,” says Wyman, “Inner-Child Therapy has taken a one-size-fits-all approach. This new model demonstrates how understanding the roles of the two personality typing systems can more effectively facilitate personal growth. Using the keys of the Enneagram, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® and Inner-Child Therapy can expedite the journey of recovery.”

The Effectiveness of the Method
Three Keys to Self-Understanding represents the culmination of more than 20 years of Wyman’s therapeutic work with clients, many of whom courageously share their stories (as well as artwork, poems, and letters, which are interspersed throughout the text). Perhaps the greatest testament to the power of Wyman’s work appears in the Epilogue, where some of these former clients tell, in their own words, what this work has meant to them and how their lives have changed as a result
