Stress and Illness

Pat Heumeller

What I have seen over and over again is that people who ignore the somatic messages begin to develop disease.  Often the diseases are some type of autoimmune disorder such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, asthma, psoriasis and the like.  I strongly suspect cancer falls into this category as well. Many times I find that, although we may halt the progression of these diseases, we cannot reverse the damage that has been done.  By accessing troubling right brain material in a session, I can turn somatic responses on and off at will.  I can bring on pain and other physical reactions to emotional distress and then eliminate those responses by restoring cognitive control to the person’s MBTI® type.

One of the triggers I often encounter with clients is related to working in a job or career that is unsuited to the person’s MBTI® type.  Again, when under the stress of working outside of type preference, the body tries to send messages that something is wrong.  These messages go largely unnoticed or ignored causing the body to up the ante.  Otto Kroeger has said many wise things and one of those is that anyone who spends more than 50% of the day working from his/her preferences is going to be a much happier camper than someone who is not.

My hope is that reductionist thinking that is based in outdated science will be replaced with a more integrated approach to health and well-being. The reductionist approach has separated not only body from mind and spirit but has also reduced the body to disjointed parts.   It is time to embrace a more integrated understanding of how we function based on a holistic approach, accepting that our understanding of how we operate has changed in the last hundred years since Einstein.  Certainly understanding type, both MBTI® and Enneagram defense, should be part of that.
